Quinnipiac University is out with a new poll that finds 69% of Americans oppose the GOP’s plan to shutdown the government over funding for Planned Parenthood. Only 23% support closing the government over the dispute. Even among Republican voters, 56% oppose a shutdown. Voters also oppose cutting off federal funding to Planned Parenthood, 52% to 41%. If Republicans think this is a winning issue for them in 2016 then it is just more proof that the majority in the Republican Party are not in reality.
Males support the cutoff of funding 49% to 44%, while females oppose it 60% to 34%. When the polling firm offered four options on abortions, most Americans believe that abortion should be legal. 22% say that abortion should be legal in all cases, while 35% say abortion should be legal in most cases. 28% supported abortion being illegal in most cases. Only 12% of voters support abortion being illegal in all cases.
As Republicans try to rebuild the brand and attract new female voters, the threat of a shutdown because of Planned Parenthood will do more harm than good for the GOP chances in 2016. While on the other side, Democrats will no doubt use this poll as more evidence of a “war on women” by the Republican Party.
