Iran’s controversial and hardline former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad raised eyebrows over the weekend when he launched his official website just months before legislative elections in the country. The site Ahmadinejad.ir, is also joined by a Google+ account and an instagram account that features Mahmoud with a big smile on his face.
The reappearance of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad online comes as a major surprise because the former president disappeared from public eye after his mandate ended in June 2013 with the election of moderate Hassan Rouhani.

Last month, Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Iran’s first vice president under Ahmadinejad, was sentenced to five years in prison, state media said.
The supreme court’s verdict came after a long-running trial on what Iranian media said were corruption charges.
Ahmadinejad has said the charges against Rahimi stemmed from before the time he was named vice president.
