In April, nearly 300 school girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram. Since then, some have escaped, but about 200 are still being held hostage. Despite the popular #BringOurGirlsBack campaign, nothing was ever done to retrieve the girls. There are now reports stating that Boko Haram is negotiating with Nigerian officials in order to release the girls in exchange for prisoners. They are supposedly only interested in an even swap, 30 prisoners for 30 girls, and they have promised that none of the girls were sold as slaves or sexually abused. According to numerous sources, Nigerian officials, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Boko Haram met four times in August to discuss a swap. Evidently the Nigerian government has rejected the idea of an even swap, but hopefully something comes of these talks and these girls are rescued before more harm comes to them. I will update this with more information as it becomes available.
