Key regions including Clackmannanshire, Orkney and Shetland all voted to remain in the United Kingdom and dealt the Yes campaign a sound defeat. More than 4.2 million people were registered to vote in the country of 5.3 million people. including, for the first time, 16 and 17-year-old, a record breaking turnout in a region that is well known for not being interested in politics and have poor election turnouts. While Scotland will remain a part of the United Kingdom for now there are still many questions left to come. Will Northern Ireland be the next to offer a referendum to break it off with the UK? How did the youth vote in Scotland break down, if it was heavily set against the United Kingdom then the UK government as a whole has a lot of relationship repairing to do in Scotland.
Currently the vote count is NO 55% and Yes 45%. The last poll conducted in the race had Yes only losing by four points.
